Montreal researchers map the next quantum network

Campus labs are coordinating with utilities and telecom groups to test secure links before the hardware leaves research corridors.

The link runs between two university buildings, under a road, through conduit that already carried ordinary fibre. It is unremarkable except for what it demonstrates: that the hard part of a quantum network is not the physics.

What the testbed is for

The link distributes entangled photon pairs between two nodes and holds a usable rate over a working day. That is a modest result by laboratory standards and a significant one in a conduit shared with commercial traffic, where temperature drift and mechanical disturbance are constant.

The point is not the distance. It is the operating conditions — running on infrastructure that exists, owned by people with other priorities, and maintained by crews who will not be told the fibre is special.

The physics works in a basement. The engineering question is whether it works under a road.

The repeater gap

Everything beyond metropolitan scale waits on repeaters, and repeaters remain the unsolved problem. Loss compounds with distance and the classical trick — amplify and retransmit — is unavailable, since the state cannot be copied.

Several approaches are being pursued in parallel and none is close to deployment. The honest framing from the group running the testbed is that metropolitan links are engineering and intercity links are still research, and conflating the two has produced a decade of overpromising.

Why the utilities are interested

The near-term application is not computing. It is key distribution for infrastructure operators — power, water, financial clearing — who have long-lived assets and a regulator asking about post-quantum risk.

Those operators are attractive partners for an unglamorous reason: they own conduit. A utility with fibre in the ground across a city is a testbed that does not require anyone to dig.

What to watch

Watch the key rate held over a full seasonal cycle rather than a demonstration day, since thermal drift across a winter is the real test. Watch whether the utility partnerships produce shared conduit or just letters of intent. And watch how carefully the group distinguishes metropolitan results from intercity claims in its next round of funding applications.
