Santiago observatories learn to share a crowded sky

Satellite trails are now a routine line in the observing log, and the fix is turning out to be a scheduling agreement rather than a telescope upgrade.

Astronomers have spent five years quantifying a problem they could already see. Wide-field surveys lose usable frames to satellite trails at a rate that no longer rounds to zero, and the affected exposures cluster in exactly the twilight hours the surveys depend on.

The measurement

Observatories now log trail incidence the way they log seeing conditions: per frame, per night, with the constellation identified where possible.

Having a number changed the conversation entirely. Operators could argue with an anecdote about a ruined photograph. They could not argue with a per-frame loss rate tracked across four sites over three years, presented in the same format they use for their own performance reporting.

You cannot negotiate about an inconvenience. You can negotiate about a percentage.

What is being proposed

Not a launch restriction. An ephemeris-sharing arrangement precise enough for observatories to schedule around known passes.

Several operators already publish predicted positions. The gap is accuracy at the minute scale, which is where scheduling actually bites — a prediction accurate to ten minutes is useless to a telescope planning a two-minute exposure, and the published uncertainties are frequently absent altogether.

Why it may work

The cost to operators is close to zero and the reputational value is high. That combination has resolved more spectrum and orbital disputes than any regulator, and it is why this looks likelier to succeed than the darkening-coatings work that preceded it.

Coatings required manufacturing changes on hardware already in production and delivered a reduction that helped visual observers more than the wide-field surveys doing the complaining. Ephemerides require a data feed.

What to watch

Watch whether the shared ephemerides carry uncertainty estimates rather than bare positions. Watch whether the arrangement survives a constellation changing hands, since it rests on goodwill rather than licence conditions. And watch the per-frame loss rate in the next survey data release, which is the only evidence that will settle it.
