Singapore port operators test a quieter supply chain
New routing software, electric yard vehicles, and tighter berthing windows are changing the rhythm of one of the world's busiest ports.

Noise is the constraint nobody planned for. The port’s expansion assumptions were about berth capacity and crane rates; the binding limit on several night operations has turned out to be how loud they are at the property line.
Where the noise comes from
Not the ships. Reversing alarms, container impacts, and yard truck movements — three sources that are individually unremarkable and collectively continuous.
The measurement exercise that started this produced one finding that reordered the work programme: reversing alarms accounted for a disproportionate share of complaints despite contributing modestly to total sound energy. Intermittent, tonal, and at exactly the frequency that carries.
The complaint is about the tone, not the total.
What has changed
Broadband reversing alarms replaced tonal ones across the yard fleet, which reduced complaints substantially without changing a single decibel reading in the aggregate.
Container handling has been harder. Impact noise is a function of how fast a box is set down, and setting it down more slowly costs crane cycles. The operators trialling this have accepted a small throughput reduction on night shifts, which was only politically possible because the alternative on the table was a curfew.
The electrification overlap
Electric yard equipment is quieter, and that has become a stronger argument for it than emissions in the internal business cases. An electric terminal tractor removes engine noise and reversing tonality at once.
The catch is charging infrastructure and the yard layout that supports it, which is a capital programme rather than a fleet purchase. Two operators sequenced it correctly; one bought vehicles and is now running them on a charging arrangement that constrains deployment.
What to watch
Watch the complaint log by source rather than by volume, since the two do not correlate. Watch whether the night throughput reduction holds when a peak season arrives. And watch whether the noise case for electrification survives a period of cheap diesel.
